My Journey
Welcome to Nena Travels! I’m Nena, and together with my family, I'm navigating the beautiful chaos of balancing our hectic schedules and traveling the globe.
After suffering a true anxiety attack on my way to Bogota, Colombia in 2006, I realized I had an extreme fear of flying! I immediately realized that anxiety was hindering my ability to fully live amazing experiences with my family. Reading about my fear, understanding ways to overcome it and praying have all enabled me to get past my fear of flight! A big part of that process has involved flying frequently. So, as a result, I have lots of great places to talk about with you.
About my people: My husband I have been married for over 20 years and I am so thankful that he opened up my appreciation for travel throughout the years! Together, we have two children, who love to travel. I now realize that might have never happened if we had not prioritized roaming as part of our family life.
This blog was born from a simple belief: business and adventure aren't mutually exclusive. Plus, you can overcome obstacles & fears along the way!
Join me as I share practical tips for busy families making memories across the globe, from quiet Kentucky to bustling international cities.
Why I Explore.
The journey started with a nudge to step outside our Kentucky comfort zone. For a busy business family, travel isn't just a luxury—it's our primary way to reconnect and recharge.

Family Travel Masterclass
✈️
The Flight Kit
- Pack a dedicated 'tech and treats' bag for each child
- Noise-cancelling headphones are great for peace on the plane and for gaming/music activities for kids during downtime.
- Download an eclectic music list and offline movies for those long-haul stretches.
- Don't forget your eye mask. (not everyone likes to keep airplane windows shut or lights off at the same time)
🏨
Work-Life Layout
- Book suites with separate living areas for taking calls/meetings.
- In-room kitchenettes save money (great for re-heating late-night snacks)
- Prioritize hotels with reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi in common areas
- Give other family members notice of when work needs to happen (as much as possible) so that no one is surprised or let down by not planning ahead.
- Stay close to the action so that when you have to work, others in the family can go grab a coffee/sandwich, visit an art gallery or go hang out by the pool.
⏳
The Leisure Strategy
- One main activity per day prevents family burnout
- Schedule buffer days or half-days between meetings for intentional exploration
- Let everyone in the family have at least one choice of restaurant or activity so that everyone can share in what they chose.
- Be flexible and ready to pivot, as plans may change due to weather or unexpected work demands.
- Keep a deck of cards in your purse mom!
